Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion

Diablo III isn’t the only game to only come out when it’s done. Other games are also finally released, after some delays. Such is the case for Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion for Nintendo 3DS that had been pushed back all the way out of 2011 into the new year.

The game is the labor of Papaya Studio, which already has some experience with the brands through their development of several Ben 10 games, as well as some Disney-related features. A little more surprising is that the developer also outsourced games like Red Alert 3 and Battle for Middle Earth II. Could you imagine mixing the two universes?

Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion is a 3D all-star brawler that lets players punch the lovable snot out of each other with up to 26 different cartoon characters. The press release fails to mention that the 3DS version only includes 18 figures and cuts away the fantastic Johnny Bravo. A trailer shows some of the network’s favorites.

Characters include Dexter (the one with the laboratory, not the serial killer), Samurai Jack, The PowerPuff Girls and your truly’s favorite: Grim from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Stages are set in the Cartoon Network universe and offer some platform segments in the vein of Smash Bros.

As we’re partial to the great Adventure Time and Regular Show programs of the network, we asked earlier if these would also be referenced in the game. Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case and that alone is a missed opportunity as Finn & Jake are all about bashing skulls.

Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion should be in a store near you right now. The game uses the 3DS’ touch screen as well as its microphone to punch toons with a roar.
