Konami released a gameplay trailer for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Though the game is getting beefed up by Platinum Games, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of change regarding its earlier mechanics. Still, it’s a nice look into its current progress.
The clip takes a look at protagonist Raiden and the tutorial for its basic attack mode. Metal Gear Rising is all about cutting things. So, like in earlier games within the franchise, Raiden will train in a VR space.
Players will need to hold a button to enter Blade Mode. It’s here that a specific cutting area can be chosen and applied and then multiplied before release. When time starts up again, Raiden will make slices in the given direction of just about anything that’s put in his way. There’s even a slight nod towards the successful mobile game Fruit Ninja. This mode has multiple uses. One of them is to safely cut away a bad guy from a hostage. Though apparently if Raiden chooses to cut away at a hostage, he’ll only slice off parts of their clothes, to reveal the sexy underwear inside. I’m sure there’s something to be said about male gaze here.
Anyway, in battle, this mechanic will take a more real-time approach and players will be able to accompany Blade Mode with some command inputs. For one, Raiden is seen tearing pieces off his enemies, before dicing them to bits. The trailer ends with some swift platform jumps and then a death from above sequence that sees the ninja impale an unsuspecting victim.
