You might have heard about the Vita’s new game Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale by now. If you haven’t, it’s the one that kind of, sort of, slightly, really looks like the Playstation’s version of Super Smash Bros. The big difference between the two though, is that All Stars uses a very chaotic system of special moves to knockout other players, instead of the very chaotic system of random item use and grabbing/throwing other players used in Smash.
Oh, and most of the characters for All Stars are battle hardened killers; there is still a bit of an age difference between Playstation and Nintendo.
Twelve All Stars have been confirmed as of now for the game. Some are obvious choices, others not so much. Here are the first 6 and my opinion on their worthiness as being named an All Star.
#1 – Kratos (God of War Series)
Playstation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 6 (7 if you count the mobile game “God of War: Betrayal,” and more if you count his appearances in games such as “Mortal Kombat”)
First Appearance: God of War (2005)
Fighting Skill: 5 out of 5
Kratos has been through a lot in a relatively short period of time. Well known for his special abilities to dish out a lot of damage and have essentially no understanding of the word “mercy”, he has brutally killed most of the gods, goddesses, titans, monsters and heroes of Greek mythology with rapid speed (Not to mention he murdered his family). He has been elevated to become the god of war. He has died and crawled back out of the Underworld. By defeating the gods he has completely upset Earth’s balance and basically destroyed the world. And he’s got an awesome beard.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars! With multiple appearances, exclusivity, and a kick ass attitude, Kratos is a worthy choice for this game
#2 – Cole MacGrath (inFAMOUS Series)
Playstation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 2 (3 if you count “Festival of Blood”)
First Appearance: inFAMOUS (2009)
Fighting Skill: 4 out of 5
Cole is the only All Star announced who could be classified as a super hero. He can control lightning to destroy almost anything in his path. He can climb up buildings better than anyone, glide is mid air, and beat the spit out of everybody with his amped up baton. As long as there is electricity flowing somewhere in his surroundings, he is invincible. And he has recently obtained the means to switch out his powers for the powers of ice and fire as well. So he is a worthy opponent for anybody who doesn’t enjoy electricity coursing through them, having their faces melted off, or being frozen solid.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 All Stars. While being a powerful force to be reckoned with, and being a Playstation exclusive, Cole hasn’t really been around long enough to be classified as a full All Star.
#3 – Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal Series)
Playstation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 10
First Appearance: Twisted Metal (1995)
Fighting Skill: 3(?) out of 5
Don’t go running up to Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck expecting a treat, he might just kill you. He enjoys doing that quite a lot. But his specialty, as far as killing goes, remains within his vehicle. With shooting missiles and bombs and bullets out of his ice cream truck, Sweet Tooth is a killing machine. But on foot, he’s just a big, bulky psychopathic killer with a head that’s on fire. How his fighting skill truly compares to other characters on the roster is a little iffy. But he still has a big arsenal, is extremely terrifying and apparently quite the powerhouse when it comes to a fist fight.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars! While he might usually be killing from behind the wheel, Sweet Tooth has been an infamous mascot in the Playstation Universe for a long time. His presence as an All Star is a must.
#4 – Fat Princess (Fat Princess Game)
Playstation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 1 (2 if you count the PSP version)
First Appearance: Fat Princess (2009)
Fighting Skill: 1 out of 5
Fat Princess is one of the quirkier choices for Playstation All Stars. She isn’t a fighter. She is actually more like a really fat flag in a capture the flag game. How exactly she moves like she does in the released All Stars videos is a mystery, cause she’s really … well, fat. The fat princess relies on her minions to do all the work for her, what she does personally is quite minimal… unless you count eating a lot of cake.
Verdict: 1 out of 5 All Stars. Being only the character of one Playstation network game, and especially not being much of a fighter makes the Fat Princess a confusing member of the All Star roster.
#5 – Big Daddy (Bioshock Series)
Playstation Exclusive: No
Game Appearances: 2
First Appearance: Bioshock (2007) (2008 for PS3)
Fighting Skill: 5 out of 5
The Big Daddy is one scary mutant with all sorts of powerful weapons and a giant drill, not something you really want to go head to head with. The Big Daddy’s are extremely protective of their Little Sisters, are extremely strong and powerful and can also be extremely fast. Nothing is quite more frightening in the underwater ruins of Rapture than the Big Daddy. Even when you are, yourself, a Big Daddy. The Big Daddy is so far the largest in size verses all the other All Stars, so he will definitely be packing quite a punch.
Verdict: 2 out of 5 All Stars. The Big Daddy is obviously a powerful fighter who is up to the challenge of battling the other All Stars, but the major fact that Bioshock is not a Playstation Exclusive makes his title as Playstation All Star questionable.
#6 – Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper Series)
Playstation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 4 (5 if you count “Playstation Move Heroes”)
First Appearance: Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (2002)
Fighting Skill: 3 out of 5
Sly is famous for his family lineage that is traced back to an ancient order of thieves following the book known as the “Thievius Raccoonus”. However, he is primarily a stealthy platformer; he’s not quite the hardened killer that a lot of the other All Stars seem to be. Because of this, he may be outclassed as far as brute fighting power is concerned. His real advantages are in his great agility and stealth skills. These skills will undoubtedly call for a different playing style to combat the other All Stars.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars. Sly Cooper might not be a combat veteran of the same caliber as others on the All Star roster, but he is still a recognizable character for all Playstation owners. Plus he will add a different style of play rather than going all out berserk like the other All Stars.
Part 2 will follow soon with the other 6 All Stars, and Part 3 will cover the major characters I believe are missing from the roster.
