This is a continuation of Judging the All Stars – Part 1. Read that first here: http://www.gamesta.com/judging-the-all-stars-part-1/
#7 – Nathan Drake (Uncharted Series)
PlayStation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 4
First Appearance: “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” (2007)
Fighting Skill: 4 out of 5
Nathan Drake is essentially the “Master Chief” of the PS3. He is the ultimate hero for the entire system. Drake is a master at treasure hunting, climbing, surviving, and kicking ass and taking names. And he does all of this while being situationally hilarious with snappy one-liners. All PlayStation owners have grown to love Drake and cherish his ability to kill thousands of goons to save the world multiple times. His absence from the All Stars would have been insanely wrong.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars! Nathan Drake is probably the All Star of the All Stars. His character has made the PS3 the powerful system that it truly is, and all owners of the Uncharted series, without a doubt, love this guy.
#8 – PaRappa the Rapper (PaRappa the Rapper Series)
PlayStation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 3
First Appearance: “PaRappa the Rapper” (1996)
Fighting Skill: 2 out of 5
PaRappa is a cute little rapping puppy and the character of a kids’ game; not really much of a fighting combatant. His fighting skill involves only the simple teaching of Chop Chop Master Onion learning via the ancient martial art of repeating raps. PaRappa runs into a number of speed bumps throughout his games, but he always keeps moving forward and believing in himself. And PaRappa is also still stuck in 2D. He may be cute, motivated and have no trouble spitting rhymes, but how that will aid him against the killing power of other All Stars will be interesting.
Verdict: 3 out of 5 All Stars. PaRappa is another goofy addition to the All Star roster. He isn’t much of a fighter, but he is a recognizable character form the original PlayStation. His addition in the game is more of one out of nostalgia than a choice that really makes sense.
#9 – Heihachi Mishima (Tekken Series)
PlayStation Exclusive: Mostly, but no
Game Appearances: 7 (More if you count games like Street Fighter v Tekken and the Tekken arcade platform separately)
First Appearance: “Tekken” (1994)
Fighting Skill: 5 out of 5
Heihachi’s entire purpose of existing is to fight. He has been in every Tekken game since the very beginning, and he has not stopped throwing his electrifying combos to knock out every opponent in his path yet. Heihachi is the main mind behind the fighting tournament for the Tekken series, named the King of the Iron Fist. Most importantly, he is over the age of 50, and still kicks some serious ass.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars. While recently he might not be entirely exclusive to Playstation, Heihachi Mishima has been exclusive to PlayStation for many years prior, and has been present in every Tekken game. Thus he probably the best choice for a PlayStation arcade style fighting game and a worthy All Star.
#10 – Jak and Daxter (Jak and Daxter Series)
Playstation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 6
First Appearance: “Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy” (2001)
Fighting Skill: 4 out of 5
Jak and Daxter – well really just Jak, Daxter is just the comedic relief – are the very recognizable duo from back when the PS2 was king. Fuelled by the power of Eco and wielding the Morph Gun, Jak has more than enough resources to challenge the other All Stars. Jak and Daxter are also resourceful platformers who wield the coveted double jump skill, a skill that will definitely help them escape the clutches of their opponents.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars. Jak and Daxter are another must in the All Star roster. They are exclusive to PlayStation, loveable and nostalgic characters, and they can easily compete with all the other All Stars with a wide selection of weapons and powers.
#11 – Colonel Radec (Killzone 2)
PlayStation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 1
First Appearance: Killzone 2
Fighting Skill: 5 out of 5
Colonel Radec is, without a doubt, the most talented Helghast soldier in the entire Helghan army. Radec knows nothing except war and combat, and his intense training has led him to become extremely deadly. He is incredibly skilled with guns and knives, is remarkably agile and swift, and he can practically turn invisible with a high tech cloaking device. Radec is also the only true final boss character on the All Star roster. I’m positive many Killzone 2 players have died many times fighting Radec, so it will be exciting to play as the nemesis himself in PlayStation All Stars.
Verdict: 5 out of 5 All Stars. A Killzone character was a must for Playstation All Stars. While the first Killzone was not a PlayStation exclusive, Killzone 2 was one of the games that promoted the release of the PS3 (even though it took forever to actually be released itself), and Radec was the most combat talented character in the game; a worthy choice for the Vita’s battle royale.
PlayStation Exclusive: Yes
Game Appearances: 3 (plus more as guest appearances)
First Appearance: Doko Demo Issyo /Together Everywhere (1999)
Fighting Skill: 0 out of 5
Toro Inoue is Sony’s mascot in Japan. He is obviously not included in the All Star Roster for the rest of the planet to enjoy. His video game appearances have nothing to do with fighting. They actually are more of a talk show/pun game that makes jokes about other PlayStation games. But hey, he’s cute, and Japan must love the little guy. If you don’t like it, you can always beat him up with another character.
Verdict: 3 out of 5 All Stars. Toro isn’t a fighter whatsoever, but he is essentially a trademark character for Sony in Japan. So he is most likely included to boost sales of the game, which isn’t a bad thing.
Part 3 will come soon and will cover who I believe is missing from the All Star roster.
