While Microsoft and Sony have been quiet about their next console offerings, everyone knows that they’re right around the corner. There have been some pretty wild rumors, but as of yet we don’t even have a name for the consoles. Most have speculated that the names could simply be PS4 and Xbox 720, but some recent domain additions by Microsoft imply that the next Xbox could in fact be called the “Xbox 8″.
Microsoft recently won a lawsuit that gave them the rights to xbox8.info and xbox8.us. They also acquired xboxmusic.com and xboxphone.com, and now seemingly have set their sites on the .com version of the xbox8 domain.
Branding the next console the Xbox 8 would make sense in some ways, and no so much in others. Microsoft has recently been on a mission to brand all of their major products together, as they renamed Zune Music to Xbox Music and renamed their phone OS to match up with their computer OS. Naming the console Xbox 8 would fit in with their recent trend of tying their products together in this manner.
On the other hand, with the rumored 10 year life-cycle they’re planning for their next console, the Xbox 8 moniker would quickly feel out of date as new versions of Windows will surely come out long before another the Xbox 8 has finished its life-cyle, leaving us with Windows 9 and Xbox 8.
What are your thoughts, do you think the Xbox 8 name would make a good one or are you partial to Xbox 720, or something else entirely? Let us know in the comments below.
