Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Nintendo has announced a new iteration of the Professor Layton franchise for Nintendo 3DS. The game will be called Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask and will come out on October 26, 2012 in Europe.

The series will dive into a new chapter for players that know the series. Branching off the end of the previous game, the professor and his chums will make for the mysterious mask. Along the way, he’ll discover things buried from his past, which will trigger flashbacks of a young Layton.

These flashbacks will also introduce a new game mode, beyond the usual puzzle solving. Players will crawl into the skin of the gentlemanly young adult and rummage through old ruins. You’ll need to evade obstacles and monsters to get to hidden chambers.

Further introductions come from 3 new game modes. In one, players will steer a toy robot towards the finish line. Another mode will test players’ abilities to stack goods on a shelf to get customers to buy the entire shelf in one turn. Finally, you’ll be able to train Luke the rabbit for circus tricks and amaze the ringmaster in order to perform.

Naturally, Professor and the Miracle Mask has plenty of puzzles; 150 teasers, to be exact. Topping that, a new puzzle will be available daily, until one year after release, offering 365 new puzzles in total. Aside from a retail release, this game will also be available as a digital download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

In perhaps sadder news, developer Level-5 has announced another, yet final iteration of the series, called Professor Layton and the Legacy of the Super Civilization. According to Siliconera, the game will be out somewhere in 2013.
