Perhaps unaware to some, Sony also has a large MMO section. Particularly, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) is in charge of most of their massive multiplayer titles. At their yearly fan event, the company announced a few more details.
The first person shooter (FPS) Planetside 2 has finally received a release date. This multiplayer action will go live in both Europe and North America on November 20, 2012 as a free-to-play title. However, gamers can also purchase a premium membership for a monthly fee of $14.99. This will include Sony’s Statio Cash currency needed to purchase many items, XP and resource gains and a priority in log-in queues. Maintaining membership will steadily unlock more bonuses, while applying for multiple months at once will unlock these incentives immediately.
The announcement comes with a new trailer that reveals the battlefields of Amerish. We can see the huge scope of this game between the green fields and mountain ranges of the game. Planetside 2 will include a lot of vehicles, such as aircrafts and quads. The futuristic armies are bathed in soft, warm lights.
More importantly, the aforementioned event also had a new game reveal. From the makers of Runes of Magic comes a new MMO called Dragon’s Prophet. We’ll post the announcement trailer below so you can get a good look, but its first impression is one of great detail and lush landscapes. The title will introduce some fresh ideas in the MMO world, such as the ability to fight over 300 massive dragons, but also capture, train and even ride these beasts. Combat will be more action oriented and feature combo systems to break away from traditional MMOs. There is probably a Guild Wars 2 influence at play on that notion.
Dragon’s Prophet has some astounding visuals, with a whirlwind of colors, huge monsters that come in many shapes and sizes and gorgeous structures. Some of these detailed constructions have a subtle Final Fantasy appeal. Character classes don’t seem to be anything too far away from the current standard, but that might change. Also, there are airships, should you not want to ride a giant dragon for some reason.
Currently, SOE only mentioned a North America release. A Beta phase will take place in the next following months. Another key feature is the possibility to create your own town. More so, players can bond together in guilds and combine their assets to create an entire kingdom with vast armies. We’re very keen to see how that would work.
