In one of my articles I asked a lot of different people to give me their top five favorite Call of Duty maps from Call of Duty 4 and on. This time, I thought it would be interesting to go the other way. After questioning some of my close friends and a bunch of random gamers, I have compiled a list of the top five worst Call of Duty maps created. Remember, this isn’t my sole opinion and that it is impossible for everyone to completely agree upon five maps. That being said, it’s time to introduce some terribly designed maps.
Crisis was clearly not a fan favorite among the group of people that I questioned, although I actually didn’t mind this map too much. I always seemed to do pretty well on it. That being said, I can still see why so many people cringed when this map popped up. They had a cool idea with this map but sadly it doesn’t play as well as all of us would have liked. There is just way too much going on with the cave/bunker, all of the buildings and the beach. Then on top of that, they also have a small section on top of the cave that connects to one of the buildings. One of the things I noticed is that I would spend a lot of time just running around the map looking for people, but I really didn’t spend all that much time actually killing my enemies. If you love running around and checking out the scenery then this is the map for you, but if you prefer to be in the midst of battles like I do then I would avoid this map at all costs. I will say one good thing about Crisis though; this map is pretty even when it comes to domination. Both teams are relatively the same distance away from the B-flag and have the same shot at controlling it. Other than that, there really aren’t any other positive things that I can say about it.
Once again, I have a map that I actually didn’t dislike every time, but it was pretty unanimous from everyone else that Cracked is one of the worst five maps to date. Cracked is a horrible map when it comes to dealing with campers. There are SO many buildings and corners that people always camp in. You rarely get in a game with people that actually maneuver around the entire map. I would never recommend playing this map on teamdeathmatch, unless you are a camper yourself and enjoy doing nothing for long periods of time. Domination, on the other hand, is at least a little better. The reason why I said I didn’t dislike this map too much was because I love to play domination. People obviously tend to move a little bit more when there’s an objective such as capturing different points. However, regardless of the game type you play, you will still have more campers on this map than almost any other map created. In the end, if you enjoy slower types of Call of Duty matches then play Cracked, otherwise stay away as best as you can!
If it was strictly up to me, Derial would be number two on this list. This is by far my least favorite map in Modern Warfare 2. Something that I despised about this map is that the majority of the map wasn’t even used. The focal points of the battles were in the main middle building. Basically whatever team controlled this building would control the pace of the entire game. One of the teams would spawn much closer to an entrance to the building so as long as they were decent, they would be able to own the building and win the game. Since this building is so important, the rest of the map is pretty much non-existent. Also, Derail was one of the biggest maps in the game but somehow it had one of the worst spawn traps. If a team was good enough, they would be able to trap the enemies by C-flag in domination and continuously murder them. Sadly, I have done this to many different teams and it has happened to me on a few different occasions. Derail is one of the most unbalanced maps in Call of Duty and should be removed from the game altogether.
Going into my first match on Carbon, I was actually really excited about it. I saw one of my friends playing on it and I assumed it was going to be a pretty cool map. Wow was I wrong with my initial assumption. I don’t know what it is about this map, but it universally hated by most Call of Duty players. For one, the color of the map is very bland. It is not appealing to the eyes and that’s important because most people don’t want to play on a map that they don’t like to look at. More importantly, the map doesn’t have great flow to it like a lot of the other maps. I find it very common for everyone to run around like chickens with their heads cut off. Carbon screams chaos with all of the different buildings and the multiple entrances to these buildings. It was really apparent that most people don’t even have a strategy whatsoever. They decide that randomly weaving in and out of buildings is the most successful plan they could have. This creates the spawns to flip-flop way more than they should and this adds to the chaotic nature of the map. All in all, this lack of flow prevents Carbon from being even remotely close to a good map.
I remember that Downturn was actually the first map that I played when I bought Modern Warfare 3. My reaction was that the map is terrible, and so is Modern Warfare 3. Luckily, MW3 has much better maps than Downturn because if the other maps were just as bad, then I wouldn’t even be playing this game today. Ever since I played it that one time, I tried my hardest to never have to experience that map again (if you can even classify it as a map). It has such an unappealing design, and is visually disgusting. The looks of the rundown buildings and destroyed vehicles aren’t really inviting you to continuously want to vote for the map. I feel like they just threw a bunch of debris and a couple of buildings and called it a day. Another terrible quality is the fact that there are so many different poorly designed paths and levels. I’ll be running through this map and then all of the sudden a guy will poke his head out from a random pathway behind me and shoot me in the back. Not only that, there are also always people that set up camp in the darkest corners of the map. Although all of these are horrible, the worst thing about this map in my opinion is the spawn system. I will go out and kill a couple of people and then all of the sudden they will spawn directly behind me along with the rest of their team. At one point there was an enemy that spawned right in front of me four times in a row. Sure I wasn’t too mad about it since I was the guy getting the kills, but it is a clear example of how messed up this map is. The mixture of all of these things makes Downturn a miserable experience and the number one worst map of all time.
I know that many people have different opinions and will disagree with some of the maps on the list. So now it’s time for you to share, what are your least favorite Call of Duty maps?
