Valve: We’re Not Making a Console

The last week has been packed with rumors about a new gaming console, supposedly being made by one of the most innovative and interesting companies in the industry: Valve. But the Half-Life, Steam, and Portal developer has consistently rebuffed the claims and distanced itself from most of the online conjecture, choosing not to answer questions and instead focus on its own projects.

Now, however, we know. Valve isn’t working on any new consoles or gaming hardware, at least according to the company’s internal press division. Marketing director Doug Lombardi claimed Valve’s recent activity creating interfaces for television screens and large displays was due to an increase in people using Steam on their TVs, not because a secret new console is in the works.

However, Lombardi was also quick to point out that Valve wasn’t ruling out the possibility of its own gaming console in the future. When quizzed by gaming news outlet Kotaku, Lombardi said that it’s not out of the possibility that Valve could create something in the future. Given the sheer size of Steam and the platform’s current inventory, a Steam console could be a major hit for Valve.

So, Valve addicts, it might be time to tick this project off the rumor list and put it to rest. While the company says there’s no console on the way right now, the future could be different. Let’s focus on our more pressing demands with Valve right now – a proper Half-Life 2 sequel, or at least some new episodic content.
